Wet Weather Golf
Now that winter is upon us there is a good chance that you may encounter some rain during your game, playing well in wet weather is all about being prepared – having the right equipment and being mentally ready to play.
Equipment
Having the right equipment is critical
- Make sure your grips are in good condition – Grip Master leather grips are incredibly tacky and help you maintain a good grip on your club in wet conditions. Team these with a rain glove and your hands won’t slip on the club, have a couple of spare gloves that you keep dry and change every few holes.
- A big umbrella is a must. The golf shop has a number of excellent umbrellas – Branded Staff umbrellas, Long handled gustbusters (great for attaching to your buggy) and the brand new Titleist staff umbrella that comes with a lifetime warranty
- A good quality waterproof jacket is a must to keep you warm and dry as are waterproof golf shoes with new spikes to keep your feet dry and well secured whilst playing.
- Rain covers for your golf bag help to keep your valuable equipment dry
- Keeping everything dry helps you enjoy your golf in the rain, some other tips include keeping spare gloves and a towel inside your umbrella and wiping your grips dry before you hit.
Mentally Prepared
Being mentally prepared to play in the rain will help you accept the conditions and enjoy your game, having all your equipment on hand and being organised is vital as is understanding that conditions are difficult and you may not be able to play some of the shots that are possible on a fine day. It is important to swing in control, possibly take one more club for your shots into the green (hit a smooth 7 iron rather than a hard 8 iron) wet greens are generally a bit softer and slower so this gives you the opportunity to be more aggressive and fire at the pin.

Most importantly remember the car sticker “A bad day at golf (even in wet weather) is better than a great day at work”
