All golfers at Mount Lawley Golf Club are required to take a sand bucket (and use it) every time they head out on the course. This policy is in place to help ensure that the members receive the best possible playing surfaces however, as a Golf Professional I would like you to treat using a sand bucket to repair your divot as your reward for hitting your iron shots correctly.

Iron shots from the fairway should be hit with a slightly descending blow creating a divot that occurs just after the ball. Former US Tour Player, Commentator and Author of the book “The Impact Zone” Bobby Clampett suggests that the location of the deepest part of the divot in relation to the ball can be directly related to that players handicap.

Tour Pro – bottom of divot 4 inches in front of the ball

0-9 handicap – bottom of divot 1 and 1/2 inches in front of the ball

9-22 handicap – bottom of divot 1 and 1/2 inches behind the ball

22 + handicap – bottom of divot way behind the ball

For advice on how you can achieve a professional impact with your irons book a lesson with me by visiting the Golf Shop section of the website or call 9271 4033.

Don’t forget your sand bucket!
